Sławomir Pietras (born in 1943)
Honorary Citizen of Warsaw since May 2012.
Sławomir Pietras was born in 1943 in Czeladź, he is a lawyer by education, a director of Polish opera houses by profession. A publicist, pedagogue, opera and ballet art populariser. For over 30 years he managed opera houses in Wrocław, Łódź, Warsaw and Poznań in turn.
A graduate from the Faculty of Law of Adam Mickiewicz University. During his studies he founded and was the first President of the Association of Opera Friends in Poznań, co-founder and a Vice-President of the Association of Polish Musical Youth – the Polish section of Jeunesses Musicales.
He has created numerous extraordinary and rarely-presented productions of the classical repertoire (Fidelio, Norma, Mefistofele, Macbeth, Ernani, Stiffelio, La Juive, Valkyrie, Parsifal, Tannhäuser ) as well as masterpieces by modern composers (Penderecki, Landowski, Britten, Szostakiewicz, Orff, Theodorakis, Praszczałek-Prasqual).
Almost 300 opera and ballet premieres were produced during his period in office. The performances were very often presented during international festivals, among others, in Xanten, Carcassone, Messina, Moscow, Hanover, Malaga and Thessaloniki.
A co-founder of the Polish Dance Theatre – Poznań Ballet, the Artistic Director of the Moniuszko Festival in Kudowa Zdrój (up to 2011), Ave Maria in Czeladź (since 2000), the Hoffman Festival in Poznań (between 2001-2008), and the Roman Maciejewski Music Festival in Leszno (since 2011). He is a juror on international and national vocal competitions, undertakes journalistic activities, and is involved in issues that are crucial to the operatic environment.
Sławomir Pietras is a initiator of the Poznań Verdi Days, the Poznań Ballet Spring, the Hoffman Festival – a Polish and German Opera Festival, and the International Dance Festival – the Lądek Ballet Summer. He is the creator of the Opera Workshops that were organised in the theatres he has managed so far. They were attended by the music lovers who wished to get acquainted with opera and ballet art matters through contact with the Director and his artists.
He has been presented with the Distinguished Cultural Service Award, the Gold Cross of Merit, the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. He is an Honorary Citizen of the cities of Warsaw, Będzin and Czeladź.
